We have enhanced our teaching of the non core subjects through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). This curriculum is topic based and ensures coverage of the learning objectives in a more consolidated joined up way which is more relevant to the way children learn, rather than segregated subject content.
We feel strongly that it is vital our children become more aware of internationalism as the world becomes a smaller place. We want them to acknowledge the similarities between nations and accept difference with respect.
IPC has common format for the children to use throughout the school; each unit has a ‘launch’ event to engage the learning, a ‘knowledge harvest’ to assess children’s understanding and knowledge in that topic before new learning takes place. The curriculum is underpinned by Mind Based Learning, Emotional Intelligence, Assessment for Learning and Multiple Intelligences, which are all strategies we have been working on for a number of years. We are sure you will hear much about from your children!
The curriculum is taught following a Mind Based Learning approach, which ensures the children learning in an active, fun way to suit their learning style. By helping our children understand more about how they learn, they can become more independent at accessing the curriculum.
Some children can learn adequately from just listening, others need greater visual stimulus and others need to touch, enact and ‘live’ what they are learning. These three styles are called Visual, Audio, and Kinaesthetic, which we sum up as the VAK approach to learning. All teachers ensure they use these different approaches in their teaching. Most of us are a mixture of more than one style but often one will dominate.
We carefully arrange our work so that the children get the opportunity to work alone, in small and larger groups, and as a whole class. The work is designed to cover a number of activities in a range of different ways, so that we provide a broad quality of education for each of our children, through a variety of teaching styles.
Our children's work is a meticulously planned programme covering development from 2 -11.
The schemes of work are continually monitored and reviewed as appropriate. We vary how we teach to suit the age and ability of our children.
Increasingly we use every opportunity to use ICT as an integral part of our teaching and learning. Children for instance will use PowerPoint to present research. |
